From Amy Thompson Extension Educator Agriculture and Natural Resources Purdue Cooperative Extension Service - Monroe County
Our goal with this courthouse landscaping project, which BIB awarded $400.00 of funding, is to convert an area which had been occupied with invasive plants (burning bush and Purple wintercreeper) and non-native plants - mostly yew, into an area of Indiana natives. Our plan is to comply county ‘s current landscape ordinance, promote native plants for homeowner use and explain the various benefits of natives (drought tolerance, disease resistance, increased water infiltration, attractive to wildlife, etc.). We will have an educational brochure and signage. Additional funds for the project have come from the current county courthouse maintenance budget and the county commissioners have offered additional funds if we need them. The team of folks working on this includes myself, Todd Stevenson (county drainage engineer who has developed educational programming on rain gardens utilizing native plants and installed several), Cathy Meyer – Naturalist with Monroe Co. Parks and Rec., Heidi Russell Wagner (she was the MC planning staff person behind the revisions to the landscaping ordinance) and Heidi’s husband Aaron Wagner who is a landscape designer. Ecologic has also provided assistance in purchasing plant material. We will be receiving the majority of the plant material in beginning/middle of May and will be utilizing Master Gardeners, habitat stewards, master naturalists and other volunteers for the installation. |
