* ONE DAY EVENTS:
1. LEARN TO RIDE
Tuesday-Thursday, May 18-20
Children spend the entire summer cruising on their bicycles after this kickoff to Bloomington Bikes Week. Participants learn how to confidently and safely ride their bikes through individual instruction and also learn about bike maintenance, road safety and proper bike and helmet fittings.
Duties: Proper instruction is an important aspect of bicycle riding. Help
teach children riding etiquette and techniques that will keep them safe as they ride their bikes.
Program Time: 4-5:30 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Bryan Park Pool, 1100 S. Woodlawn Ave.-parking lot
Age of Volunteers: 16 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 8 per day
Other: Sign up for one or both sessions of Learn to Ride. Volunteers will do a lot of running. Class will be rescheduled in case of inclement weather.
2. BIKE RODEO
Tuesday, May 18
A free, family event to entertain and educate children on cycling safety and the importance of wearing bike helmets. Participants can bike through an obstacle course, enjoy snacks and learn something new! Helmets provided for riders who need them. Bring your own bike. A few bikes will be available for use in the Rodeo. Sponsored by: Bloomington Hospital, SAFE Routes to School.
Duties: If you value child safety, the Bike Rodeo provides a great opportunity to get involved. Volunteers assist with the safety challenge course, fit bike helmets and distribute snacks and door prizes.
Program Time: 3:30-6 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Summit Elementary School, 1450 W. Countryside Ln.
Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 3-5
3. BRYAN PARK CREEK MAINTENANCE DAY
Wednesday, June 2
The Parks and Recreation Department has earned Community Wildlife Habitat certification from the National Wildlife Federation. The Bryan Park Creek naturalized area played a key role in certification and requires periodic maintenance to control invasive species and ensure native plant success.
Duties: Volunteers assist with monthly upkeep of this natural area! Help maintain the native plants along beautiful Bryan Park Creek.
Program Time: 5:30-7 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Bryan Park, 1100 S. Woodlawn Ave. - Woodlawn Shelter
Age of Volunteers: 12 yrs. and up---Children under 12 yrs. must be accompanied by an adult.
Number of Volunteers: 5-30
*(Counts towards Citizen Scientist certification)*
4. SUMMER JAMBOREE
Friday, June 4
Families kick off their healthiest and most active summer ever with sports and activities for everyone to enjoy, plus ongoing contests, relays and prizes. Kids can enjoy arts and crafts, obstacle courses, and a bounce house. Everyone can register to win fantastic prizes.
Duties: Volunteer help run various active stations and direct participating families to the fun!
Program Time: 5:30-9:30 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Twin Lakes Recreation Center, 2350 W. Bloomfield Rd.
Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 5-7
5. NATIONAL TRAILS DAY 2010
Saturday, June 5
National Trails Day 2010 celebrates the event's 18th anniversary! Hiking trails allow us to keep in touch with the natural world while getting exercise and relieving stress. A variety of recreation, fitness, and transportation goals can be achieved with a good trail system.
Duties: Volunteers are needed to help maintain trails at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.
Program Time: 9 a.m.-Noon
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, 3300 N. Headley Rd.
Age of Volunteers: 14 yrs. and up --- Children under age 16 yrs. must be accompanied by an adult.
Number of Volunteers: 5-30
Other: Sign up as an individual or as a group. Lunch will be served to all volunteers.

6. TOUCH A TRUCK
Wednesday, June 9
Rain date: Thursday, June 10
If you are dazzled by shiny chrome and large tires, trucks with lifts and loud horns, vehicles that dump loads of dirt or rock or fly in the sky, then put your imagination in gear and join us for the 10th annual Touch a Truck. Youngsters and curious adults will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with their favorite big rig!
Duties: Do you enjoy seeing amazement on the faces of small children? Come out and experience it firsthand. Volunteers assist with event setup, monitor stations, and distribute refreshments and snacks to our guests.
Program Time: Shift #1, 8:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m./Shift #2, Noon-3 p.m.
Rain date: 10-2 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Twin Lakes parking lot, 2350 W. Bloomfield Rd.
Age of Volunteers: 16 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 5 per shift
7. WELLNESS CHALLENGE OF BLOOMINGTON
Saturdays, June 19, July 17, and August 7
The 2010 Wellness Challenge of Bloomington is a team-based initiative aimed at improving the wellness of the Bloomington community through an abundance of unique activities, seminars, and screenings. By creating "healthy" competition among teams, we encourage participants to improve their overall health as well as increase camaraderie in our community.
Duties: Volunteers help run monthly events associated with the Wellness Challenge of Bloomington. Events have a health focus, and volunteer duties may include registering participants, assisting with screenings, or leading activities.
Program Time:
Saturday, June 19: 8 a.m.-Noon
Third St. Park, 331 S. Washington St.
Saturday, July 17: 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
Showers Plaza, 401 N. Morton St.
Saturday, August 7: 8 a.m.-Noon

8. FATHER'S DAY FISHING DERBY
Sunday, June 20
Bring the family for an excellent day on Griffy Lake's shore and see what you can catch. First-time anglers are welcome --- we'll have volunteers available to teach the basics. Some loaner equipment will be available, but bring your own if you have it. Door prizes, games, and snacks will be there for everyone to enjoy. Fishing license is required for ages 17 yrs. and up.
Duties: You don't have to be a seasoned angler to volunteer at this event. We're just looking to "reel" in some volunteers who enjoy the outdoors and can teach the basics of fishing.
Program Time: 7:30-11:30 a.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, 3300 N. Headley Rd. --- Meet at the boathouse.
Age of Volunteers: 16 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 5
9. SUPER SAND DAY
Tuesday, June 22
Watch the Banneker backyard become your neighborhood super sunny beach! We provide the sand and the toys, so preschoolers can play with other toddlers and enjoy the summer sun!
Duties: Volunteers help event staff with setup and hands-on activities to help bring the beach to Banneker!
Program Time: 9 a.m.-Noon
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: City of Bloomington Banneker Community Center, 930 W. Seventh St.
Age of Volunteers: 14 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 2
10. INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
Saturday, July 3
Everybody loves a PARADE! This year's Independence Day parade theme is "The Spirit of Bloomington!" There will be plenty of people with lawn chairs in hand heading downtown to celebrate, while waving their flags proudly! The route begins at the corner of Seventh Street and Indiana Avenue, marches west to Walnut Street, heads north to Eighth Street, marches west to College Avenue, turns east on Kirkwood Avenue and ends at Indiana Avenue. The Parade and festivities are brought to the community by the Parks and Recreation Department and Downtown Bloomington, Inc., and are sponsored by the American Legion Burton Woolery Post 18.
Duties: Volunteers will help with road closures and organizing entries.
Program Time: 7:30-12 p.m.
Training: Volunteers will be trained at the beginning of their shift.
Location: Meet at the Sample Gates, Indiana and Kirkwood Avenues
Age of Volunteers: 18 yrs. and up
Number of Volunteers: 8
* ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES:
1. COMMUNITY GARDENS
April -October 31
The Community Gardens Program grows both plants and community. Since 1984, Parks and Recreation has offered community gardening opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. A favorite venue of volunteer groups, the gardens benefit from a number of service projects throughout the year.
Duties: Volunteers assist the staff in maintaining paths, turning compost, weeding, and creating and maintaining ornamental, wildlife, and demonstration plantings.
Program Time:
Willie Streeter Garden - Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-Noon
Crestmont Garden - Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Training: Volunteers are required to attend an orientation prior to the program.
Location: Crestmont or Willie Streeter Community Gardens
Age of volunteers: 12 yrs. and up
Number of volunteers: 5-25
